Mortar Board Hosts Annual LEAD Conference

Mortar Board recently hosted almost 60 local high school students for its annual LEAD conference. Mortar Board is a national senior honor society which has three fundamental values of scholarship, leadership, and service. At Lyon, Mortar Board currently has 38 members and is advised by Dr. Irosha Nawarathne.

The leadership conference allowed the high school students to interact with leaders on the Lyon College campus, both faculty members and students, giving them an inside view into varying leadership roles in college life and how they can prepare themselves to be leaders in their future with choices they make now.

The event included sessions from career counselor Annette Castleberry giving tips on how to successfully make it through a college interview. Cave City High School counselor Vickie Green talked about dealing with and preventing stress and anxiety in the college admissions process. The Lyon College LEAP staff allowed the students to participate in some outdoor games and activities that are offered on campus. Lyon President Dr. Joseph King gave an address about leadership. A faculty panel talked on and answered questions about what it means to be a leader. The student panel talked to and answered questions from a wide variety of topics regarding college life and the college process. Mortar Board members shared personal experiences with the students to give them a better understanding of the college process and what to expect in the upcoming years. Finally, the keynote speaker, Matt Crisman, the Vice President for Enrollment Services, spoke about leadership, applying to college, and the interview process.

When asked about their day, students said they enjoyed the day and have an even bigger desire to come to Lyon than they had before. Counselors appreciated the interview tips and said they would be immensely helpful for their students. Overall, hosting students from 10 area schools for a 5-hour event on leadership skills and practices generated a great success for the Lyon College Order of the Tartan Mortar Board.
