Dinner on a Dime: Mug Lava Cake

Ingredients ($21 or less based on brand or store):

  • 1 box dark chocolate cake mix ($2)

  • ½ box white angel food cake mix ($4)

  • Water

  • Cooking spray ($3)

  • 4 bars mildly sweet chocolate ($3 each)


  • In a gallon-sized, re-sealable food storage bag, combine cake mixes; seal bag and shake well to mix.

  • To make ONE mug cake, spray a microwavable mug (about 12 ounces) with cooking spray (I use Pam)

  • Add 2 tablespoons of water and 3 tablespoons of dry cake mix; stir well to blend

  • Place 3 chocolate bar rectangles, DO NOT OVERLAP THEM, on top of the cake batter in the mug.

  • Microwave uncovered for 45 seconds to 1 minute or until cake is slightly moist on top. DO NOT OVEROOK OR CAKE WILL BE DRY

  • Turn out onto plate to eat or eat out of mug, top with whipped cream if desired.

  • Repeat steps 2 to make up to 20 mug cakes
